Update From the Field: Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa’am

Years of planning, design, and collaboration are coming together as Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa’am approaches its November 15th opening. Built on Old Pascua Community land, the project presented Yaeger with an opportunity to create a contemporary entertainment destination that responds meaningfully to its place, climate and cultural context.

A Design Inspired by Three Suns

Vahi Taa’am means “Three Suns” in Yoeme, the language of the Pascua Yaqui people. The name provided an important source of inspiration for the project, with representations of the sun appearing throughout the architectural elements, interior environment, and material palette.

One of the most prominent exterior expressions is the 26-foot copper dome.

The sun motif continues throughout the interior through lighting, ceiling details and floor patterns, creating visual connections across the property and reinforcing a cohesive design identity.

Drawing from the Sonoran Desert

The architecture and interiors were developed to reflect the colors, textures and character of Southern Arizona. The design uses materials, forms and details to create a contemporary expression of its surroundings.

Vaulted and domed ceilings establish a sense of scale throughout the interior, complemented by wood accents, archways, rustic ironwork and patterned terrazzo. Textured finishes introduce the earthy tones and layered character of the desert landscape, while decorative ceiling installations and integrated lighting bring additional dimension to the guest experience.

A dramatic interior dome becomes both an architectural focal point and a canvas for art. A 24,000 square foot mural by Tucson artist Joe Pagac transforms the ceiling into an expansive Arizona sky. Programmable lighting works with the artwork to shift the atmosphere overhead, moving from the brightness of midday toward the warm amber tones of a Sonoran Desert sunset – resulting in an interior environment that changes throughout the day while maintaining a strong connection to the landscape beyond the building.

Architecture, Art and Cultural Identity

The project incorporates artwork that speaks directly to Pascua Yaqui traditions and the significance of the site, adding another layer of cultural storytelling to the guest experience.

Throughout Vahi Taa’am, architecture and art work together to create a sense of identity and place. The goal was not simply to design a new gaming facility, but to develop an environment where in which material, light, form and artwork contribute to a larger story.

A New Destination Takes Shape

The newest gaming site of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe encompasses over 150,000 square feet.

With McCarthy Building Companies leading construction, Vahi Taa’am is now entering the final stages of completion ahead of its November 15th opening!

The finished property will include a gaming floor of more than 52,000 square feet along with multiple dining, bar and entertainment spaces. Its location adjacent to Interstate 10 establishes a highly visible new presence in Tucson while connecting the development to one of the region’s primary transportation corridors.

For Yaeger Architecture, seeing the project transition from early concepts and renderings to a completed destination is an exciting milestone. From the copper dome rising above the desert landscape to the expansive sky overhead inside, Vahi Taa’am demonstrates how architecture can help connect a contemporary guest experience with the identity of its surroundings.

We look forward to celebrating with the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Casino Del Sol, McCarthy Building Companies and the many project partners who helped bring Vahi Taa’am to life when its doors open later this fall.
